Romeo and Juliet- Reimagining a Scene

This week, the students are working in small groups to recontextulase a scene from Act 1.

Below are the guidelines that the students have been given to complete this task. Watch this space for the videos of their work!

  1. Select a scene from Act 1 (we have read to the end of this act so you can select any scene we have read so far).
  2. Think about the context that you will reimagine the scene in.
  3. Consider where you will set your scene. What is the physical location of the scene?
  4. Look at the characters in your scene. Think about which characters are essential for getting the main aspects of the scene across. Are there any characters that you could merge together or drop? Remember: Baz Lurhmann uses the media to replace the chorus and servants in his  reimagined film version of Romeo and Juliet.
  5. Re-write the script to fit your new scene. Include stage directions in this re-write. Bonus challenge: can you rewrite some of Shakespeares language devices in your script (iambic pentameter, rhyme, metaphor).
  6. Rehearse your scene and be ready to perform it for the class on Friday the 1st of March. Note: you do not need to know your script off by heart.
